Mini-Med Plans are self-funded plans that are usually offered to employees who do not qualify for or cannot afford regular major-medical coverage, like part-time workers. Benefits are limited and may have deductibles and copayments but cover many of the basic services a majority of people need such as physician visits, emergency room visits and prescriptions. Because studies show that most employees do not use more than $1,000 of benefits annually, Mini-Med Plans are a great way for employers to offer some essential benefits to employees who would not otherwise be eligible.
Since the premiums are based on capped amounts, there is virtually no risk and they can be set very low. Claims are paid on a reimbursement basis, so there is much less administration and overhead costs and any unused premiums go back to the employer.
